Mission Statement

"Together in Unity"


The Martin Luther King Committee of the New Hope Community is a nonprofit (501) c3 organization. Our mission is to promote educational workshops on Dr. Martin Luther King’s Philosophy of nonviolence. 


  1. To educate and teach citizens on the importance of voting. How to register to vote and where to vote.
  2. To teach citizens how to become community leaders.
  3. To ensure and promote annual MLK programs and activities.
  4. To ensure that the citizens of Rutherfordton are aware of the resources available from the MLK Committee of the life and legacy of Dr. King. 
  5. To offer field trips to the King Center in Atlanta, Georgia and to other historical museums throughout the United States.

MLK Committee Goals

  • To award scholarships to deserving student whose goal is to pursue a higher education of learning.
  • To offer a Summer Youth Leadership Program to youth ages 12-16. This program is held for three weeks in July of each year. The focus is on becoming a community leader.
  • To offer youth and adult the opportunity to tour historical museums and attend workshops on the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 
  • To provide health awareness sessions to the citizens of Rutherfordton. 
  • To offer workshops on how to register to vote and the importance of voting. And to provide a ride to the voting polls.
  • To work with other community agencies, organizations and churches on civil rights issues that promotes nonviolence, love, and peace.
